SRW vs DRW: what the letters mean
SRW (single rear wheel) means one tire on each side of the rear axle. It is the standard layout: easier to park, better to drive empty, and fits a normal parking space.
DRW (dual rear wheel, or “dually”) means two tires on each side of the rear axle. The extra tires and wider axle allow a 14,000-lb GVWR and a much higher payload, and give better stability under heavy loads or a gooseneck trailer. The trade-offs are a wider truck, a stiffer ride when empty and a higher price.
Rule of thumb: an SRW F-350 suits daily driving with moderate hauling. Choose a DRW if you carry a heavy slide-in camper or tow a heavy fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer. Compare the numbers: on the 6.8L engine the SRW tops out at 5,137 lb and the DRW at 8,000 lb, a gain of about 2,860 lb.
Is the F-350 a one-ton truck? Yes. “One-ton” is the class name for the 350/3500 series. It dates from older payload ratings. A modern F-350 carries well over one ton, as the tables above show.
GVWR, GCWR and curb weight
- GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is the most the loaded truck itself may weigh: truck, passengers, fuel, cargo and tongue weight. It is printed on the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s door jamb.
- Curb weight is the empty truck with fluids and a full fuel tank.
- GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is the most the truck and trailer may weigh together.

GVWR packages and the camper package
Some F-350s offer different GVWR packages (the 12,000-lb and 12,400-lb packages are commonly mentioned) and a camper package. Owner reports say:
- A lower GVWR package can reduce the sticker GVWR and therefore the payload. Owners describe it as a rating change for insurance and registration purposes rather than a hardware change .
- The camper package adds hardware such as a heavier rear axle and a rear sway bar, and is recommended for heavy slide-in campers .
Because the packages change what is on your sticker, the sticker always wins. Ask the dealer for the build sheet and check the GVWR and rear axle rating before you order or buy.
How trim, cab and options change payload
Everything the factory adds becomes curb weight, so it comes off your payload.

- Drive: 4×4 adds weight over 4×2.
- Trim: a Platinum or King Ranch carries more equipment than an XL and has less payload. The Tremor package adds off-road hardware, which also adds weight. Check the sticker on any trim you are considering.
- Chassis cab: a cab-and-chassis truck has no pickup bed, so you add a flatbed, stake, dump or utility body. Its rating is for the chassis, and the weight of the body counts against it.

What counts against your payload
Payload covers everything you add to the truck, not only what is in the bed:
- Driver and passengers
- Cargo in the cab and the bed
- Aftermarket parts such as a bed cover, toolbox, bumper or winch
- A slide-in camper
- Tongue or pin weight from a trailer
Fuel is already in the curb weight, so it does not come off your payload.
Worked example (2024 Crew Cab 4×4, 6.7L H.O. diesel): the table above lists 4,267 lb of cargo capacity for this truck. A buyer tows a 20,000-lb fifth-wheel trailer with 20% pin weight, which is 4,000 lb. Add the driver (200 lb), a passenger (150 lb), two more passengers (150 lb), a toolbox (50 lb) and the hitch (100 lb). That is 4,650 lb, which is 383 lb over the limit. The truck can pull the trailer, but it cannot carry the trailer’s pin weight plus the people and gear. That is the payload trap.
Payload vs towing capacity
Payload is the weight the truck carries on its own frame. Towing capacity is the weight it can pull. Pin or tongue weight counts as payload, which is why a truck can be under its towing limit and still be overloaded. Check both ratings and the GCWR.

Can I increase my F-350’s payload?
No. The payload rating comes from the GVWR and the axle and tire ratings, and you cannot legally exceed them. Helper springs or air bags can improve how the truck sits under a load, but they do not change the rating on your sticker. To carry more, choose a build with a higher payload: a gas engine, a Regular Cab, a lighter trim, and a dually if you need the most.
