How to Check Oil Level on a RAM 1500
- Park on level ground and let the engine cool 5–10 minutes.
- Locate the dipstick (yellow handle on most Ram 1500s), pull out, wipe clean, reinsert fully.
- Pull out again — level should be between MIN and MAX marks.
- If below MIN, add oil in half-quart increments using the correct spec for your engine.
- Do not overfill — oil above MAX causes foaming and engine damage.
RAM 1500 Oil Change Intervals
- Normal (2013+, full synthetic): Up to 10,000 miles or 12 months
- Severe (towing, short trips, extreme temps): Every 5,000–6,000 miles
- 2025 Hurricane HO / RHO: Maximum 6,000 miles (owner’s manual spec)
- Pre-2013 (conventional oil): Every 3,000–5,000 miles
- EcoDiesel (all gens): Follow OCIS, typically 10,000 miles

Frequently Asked Questions
How many quarts of oil does a Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI take?
7 quarts with the filter, all model years (2003–2024, 2026). Oil type: 5W-20 for 2003–2021, 0W-20 starting 2022. Full engine breakdown: 5.7L HEMI MDS and VVT guide.
What oil does a 2019 Ram 1500 take?
5.7L HEMI: 7 qt 5W-20 full synthetic. 3.6L V6: 5.9 qt 0W-20. EcoDiesel Gen 2: 10.5 qt 5W-40 (MS-10902). See: 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI oil guide.
What oil does a 2022 Ram 1500 take?
5.7L HEMI eTorque: 7 qt 0W-20 (MS-6395). 3.6L V6: 5.9 qt 0W-20. EcoDiesel Gen 3: 8.5 qt 5W-40. Don’t forget the filter: best oil filters for Ram 1500 HEMI.
Can I use 5W-30 instead of 5W-20 in my Ram 1500?
No. Use only the spec on your oil cap. Wrong viscosity on MDS-equipped HEMIs can prevent cylinder deactivation, trigger warning lights, and affect warranty. See: 5.7L HEMI MDS guide.
What is the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel oil capacity?
Gen 2 (2014–2019): 10.5 qt, 5W-40 (MS-10902/CJ-4). Gen 3 (2020–2023): 8.5 qt, 5W-40 (MS-12991). Not interchangeable — wrong spec causes turbo deposits. For diesel fleet: Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins oil capacity.
What oil does the 2025 Ram 1500 Hurricane take?
SST: 7.5 qt 0W-20 (MS-6395). HO/RHO: 7.5 qt 0W-40 (MS-A0921). Do NOT use 0W-20 in the HO engine.
